First project on my Sherline Lathe with a question of length

I have the 17" lathe and I've run the saddle gib into the steady rest and the base under the head stock trying to work in close. I still haven't cut down the gib. Just approached the problems differently. On the other hand, gibs are cheap.

If your tool is on the cross slide you can always remove the tail stock to get a little more room for the tool.

I should have looked at my machine.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll give this a whirl again when I get the 17".

One of the things I'm looking forward to with the 17 is not having to constantly take the tail off for a bit more room. We were actually hitting the end of the leadscrew. Probably had a good half inch from the boring bar tip to the face of the work with everything backed all the way out.
