Fixing a mangled hole

I though this video was interesting.



You can't just punch a drill through it. It would damage the drill and wander like crazy.

My first though was an Annular cutter but mine only go to 2" deep.

I would start like he did. A spot drill and then a pilot hole. I don't have any carbide drills but a few carbide tipped drills.

If the hole location had to be right I would probably punch an extra long 3/4" endmill through on center and use one of my solid carbide 5/8" boring bars with my big boring head and open that sucker up until i could fit a 3/4" boring bar into it and finish it that way.

That plate is much bigger than my mill table so i would be doing the work hanging off the back side of my mill table with the head turned. My mill has an R8 taper so no huge cuts or feats of strength. With power feed I'd bet i could knock it out in an hour or two.

These videos are fun for the mental exercise. There are many here much more knowledgeable than I.

I would think a insert drill/boring bar combo would be pretty awesome for starting the hole. I wonder if an R8 version exists.
