Happy Canada Day.

Pardon this Yankee, but what is the significance of the date?

Canada Day, observed on July 1st, is a national holiday marking the anniversary of Confederation in 1867, when the British North America Act came into effect. ... This act united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.
Ahh, I remember when a map of the world was mostly pink.

This is the best explanation of the North American Act,1857:
British North America Act, 1867

This legislation, passed by the British Parliament, created Canada as a new, domestically self-governing federation, consisting of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, on July 1, 1867. The British North America Act (now the Constitution Act) established the new federation’s distribution of responsibilities and powers for each level of government and the rights of its inhabitants.

Although the union of the provinces was ultimately to promote the interests of the British monarchy.
