Hardness Tester

I've been going through some of the tools I got with my mill and found this Ames Hardness Tester No 2. I understand what it does and the instructions with it tell me how it works but? How would it help me, as a hobbyist? I haven't checked the value yet but I think I could put the value of this item toward something more suitable.

A hardness tester would be useful if you ever do any heat treating of steel. Not every hobbyist does heat treating, and if you don't plan to, you could definitely make a few bucks selling the tester. No idea what kind of $$ you're looking at, but the tester looks to be in excellent condition. Maybe Google "hardness testers" to get a feel for the market?
