Another way that might be a little slower but much more controlled. HF sells 4" diamond cutoff disks. Make a mandrel clamp it in the lathe, with the ways covered of course, clamp the piece in the tool holder and feed it into the disc. The diamond wheels work great with the tool steels, the harder the better. A little lube helps to keep the wheel from clogging. This can be done at relatively slow speeds so little to no heat.
