How to remove South Bend 9 stud gear nut?

I just removed one from my heavy 10.....I used channel locks to hold the gear, and a cordless impact driver.

Ouch! That sounds harsh. Glad it worked out. Both the gears I broke were Zamak, and one was in pretty bad shape (crumbly). It is not a disaster. There seem to be replacements available on Ebay. But it was unnerving to have such a tight nut. It sure doesn't need to be that tight. I guess that is the problem with buying an old lathe in somewhat rough shape.
