I have been having a lot of fun with my harbor freight 8x12 (8x14). I decided to make a ball cutter but not having a mill I had to chose one I could make with the lathe and my drill press. I decided on this one.

The milling attachment is my next project although I could have used it on the ball turner. The shaft is very close tolerance with a little graphite for lube. The cutter is supposed to be round but I have yet to find one and my sharpening skills have not progressed that far yet. I still get good results but have to spend a little more time on finishing.

My very first job was to adjust the belt on my drive gear. I didn't want to tear the back off again so the simple solution was to drill a hole.

I believe that with my limited skill I'll be able to make a ball turner like that. Thanks for the idea.

Dalee, I thought of using roller bearings but after much thinking about it - your logic makes sense re plain bearings being better.
