I got the new ISO30 collet chuck for my milling machine, together with quite a few other nice to have's . I'm currently using a Clark Auto Lock chuck and it uses an M10 drawbar, while the new chuck needs an M12.

So, I need to make the new drawbar and I just wanted to ask whether there's anything special to a drawbar, apart from it obviously having to be the correct length, have the correct length thread, etc?
Should I use a particular type of steel, for instance?

I'd appreciate any advice.

I've made a drawbar for my lathe and one for my horizontal mill.

I used whatever steel I had on hand. If it requires something more than that I didn't know it and haven't noticed any problems in use.

Of course, I could be so ignorant that I don't know what I don't know.

Make sure you have room through the spindle for the larger thread, if you haven't already...

If you know a good welder you can have the old drawbar thread built up and turn and rethread it to new size.
