Mill spindle play???

Nice work!
bearing clearances are a "feel" for me, i set them to MFG torque for preload- when specified
when there are no specifications around, i'll go about it this way...
overtighten the bearing slightly (about 1/8 turn), then back the nut off a thread or 2, then snug the nut while rotating the shaft/spindle until the shaft/spindle has the very slightest of drag. then lock er' down- she's good to go

Good info, I'll be flying blind on my bearing install, I'm a bit nervous about this part.
Wish I had a manual covering some of the details.

South bend mill circa 1956, similar in look to a bridgeport, the head is a bit different, no drawbar.

Ah ok. Yeah, not sure how much help I can be.
I pretty much know this clone head inside and out now. I was able to tear it down far enough to get the spindle out, tightened, and back together running in less than an hour.
