Mini Lathe - High And Low Speed - Breaking In The Motor

I'm following this advice (see last page) on breaking in the motor in my new lathe:

When I select high speed, the motor turns but the chuck doesn't - what am I missing?

There is a set of gears in the headstock that is shifted when you go to high speed. If they don't engage, the motor will turn , but not the chuck. The gears can only be shifted when the motor is not running. I suspect that you are between gears. Other possibility is a stripped gear. In most cases, these are plastic gears (although metal ones are available). These gears are illustrated in the link you provided.

Doh! You are quite right, Owl. Operator error. I was not shifting the lever all the way forward and it must have been between gears.
