I've been working on upgrades on the new to me 1978 Bridgeport. Replaced the X-Y vintage DRO with a 4 axis capable. I reused the 2 Acurite scales on x and y then added a linear glass to the knee for a Z indicator. That one was straightforward. The quill not so much. After looking at what's been done and the space available I got the slimmest magnetic scale I could find and went to it. Started by making a piece to wrap about 200 degrees of the quill stop nut to get a square mounting surface for the read head and tapped 2 holes on the front of the head to mount a piece of aluminum angle to hold the scale. There are probably a few things I'd do differently at this point but fairly minor. It's on and giving good indication. The DRO I bought allows summing of any 2 axis so my current readout set is X, Y, Z and U which is the sum of Knee and Quill. I'll see how I like that vs just a straight Quill readout. Pictures below.
