Naval Service records

As usual military records are a mess. I suspect their paperwork/records may have inspired the word "FUBAR" we're all familiar with.
my DD214 shows I spent 2.5 years as a fire control technician and 4 years as a nuclear electrician. Right below where it shows I only served 4 years.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the enlistment requirements for Yeoman (clerk) consisting of 1) breathes unassisted, 2) can spell own name.

I would second finding the folder he left with. You’ll still be depending on his record keeping though. By the time I was in, (Army) they encouraged us to keep all of our documentation and regularly audited it to ensure we were maintaining it. You may also get clues from his awards. If you can cross reference his awards with areas of operation, you might be able to it narrow down.
