I just joined here, but my first machining project was in 1974...

I was just turning some 4340 tubing with a LONG overhang. Should've got out the steady rest, but thought I'd get by. Anyway, it started ringing like a bell when I put the cutter to it. Increased the feed to get past it and the chatter was terrible.

I remember somebody saying to lay a hammer on it. I KNOW it was here, but don't remember who, or the thread. Anyway, I grabbed the large heavy mallet and laid on the tube. Added just a little extra down pressure and it cut smooth as silk.

I remember that thread too and I cant remember who did it and showed us his lead hammers.
