If you have access to a laser cutter these online generators seem particularly useful. Gear trains made out of acrylic or wood would be sufficient for a lot of applications, especially prototyping. Beats the heck out of buying or making a bunch of cutters and spending hours at the mill with a rotary table and indexing plates.

I'm fortunate enough to be near a TechShop that has Epilog laser cutters, and the Glowforge project has certainly piqued my interest.

Also useful for laser cutting are box generators like MakerCase, Boxmaker, or Make-A-Box.
