I got my VFD hooked up the mill. Yippee!

It's the 1140 RPM motor, so pulley speeds are 4200, 2940, 1620, 780, 470, 245. Any suggestions as to where I should set it? I know I can shift the pulleys whenever necessary, but what's the tradeoff (if any) between speed and torque, going through the VFD?

Hi Woodman,

It might be good to remember that the only cooling comes from the rotation of the motor fan.
Slow motor speeds make lesser cooling.

Therefore I would suggest that you set the pulleys to make the motor run as fast as you can to yield the desired spindle speed. ( I'm talking about normal speed ranges here, as going beyond the normal speed of the motor will bring up a new set of possible problems. ).

Don't try to make a grinder out of it unless you are totally familiar with these possibilities.
