Hey all! I've come into the option of buying a Taiwanese 12x36 lathe, it looks to be a belt driven version made before the more ubiquitous geared head asian lathe. Machine is currently filthy and has some surface rust, but everything moves freely and seems lightly used. Comes with a 3 and 4 jaw, faceplate with dogs, steady and follow rest. My main point of concern is that I did find a broken tooth on one of the spindle gears and some slight damage to some other teeth. Asking price is $500 bundled with a junky Harbor Freight drill press that I would just resell.
Unfortunately I could not observe the machine under power to see if this caused any issues in back gear, the current owner has never operated it, it's an inherited tool that he has no interest in.
The only other point I can think of bringing up is that I currently have a fairly good condition Craftsman/Atlas 12x36, the heavier duty "commercial" model, benchtop version.
With all that in mind, is this a deal any of you would go after to replace my current machine? It needs a little elbow grease but seems solid aside from the geartrain concerns.
