should I get it?

Don't order a minilathe chuck key from Grizzly!
Right now it is priced at $37.00. A few months ago it was well under $10.
I tried to tell them they had erred, but they insisted that price was correct.

I need one also.

To adjust the threading dial, loosen the screws. Pull it away from the leadscrew and slip a piece of regular paper behind it. Mash it back up against the leadscrew, trapping the paper. This will give you just enough clearance to mesh properly but not bind. Naturally, you tear the paper out before using the machine.

I think it will be a good buy since you are just starting out.

If you find it is not the hobby for you, you are not out of a lot of cash.

If on the other hand you fall in love you will want a bigger lathe someday.
keep the little guy for doing other odd jobs or set it up for certain operations!
The list is endless!

Most of us here have more than one lathe.
You just seem to collect them for some reason.... :)

See my signature for the update!!
I sold my Sherline long bed lathe and mill to buy the Myford ML7.
I love that lathe!!! We are becoming friends finally.... ::thumbzup::

Bought and restored and atlas 618, still have to set it up and use it...
It is a more modern one with roller bearings and is really smooth.

Picked up a Taig the other day...
$250 for the lathe, motor and a 3 jaw chuck.
The real winner is that it is mounted on a 1/2 inch thick Alu plate!!!
Still have to try it out...

Not to mention the Sieg SX2L that i am slowly getting set up...

I now have my eye on finding a nice South Bend.....

When will the madness end???

Not wishing to hijack this thread any further...

I had an idea!
I see we have a section for " show us your 7X" lathe and "show us your import lathe"

Can we start a sticky titled " Show us your workshop"?
Of course you have to include pics of the workshop and all your tools!!
It would be neat to get a perspective of where some of us produce our work!
A clean up would not be required!!
My tool boxes seem to throw up tools all over the place when i am not looking.... :)

It would also be cool to see all of our tools in a single post and not spread out over the entire board.

So include all your machines and tools, no matter where they are made, from the ones you cannot live without to the ones you use daily.
I think it should be a pretty good thread that will be quite busy!!!

Of course you can start that thread!

I just posted some workshop videos off YouTube that were interesting, including some basements.

Enjoy!

Well, as silly as it sounds, I just finally got around to playing with the lathe. My sister wanted to borrow it to practice on as she is also in a machining course, and I wanted to make sure it was working fine. I myself just started using an old south bend in school, and now have an idea what is going on. Played with it, and loved it.

A few observations from a total noob though.

1. drill chuck is going to need to be cut down, as it is too long for the tail stock.
2. need a live center asap
3. never got the extra gears for this lathe, so to do any threading, I need to buy a set of gears
4. need outside jaws, did not get those either with the lathe.
5. boy is this small, spoiled by the big south bend in school.
6. looking for a medium sized or a larger mini-lathe for when the price is right. Too little space when using a live center or drill chuck to do as much as I would like. Still fun though.
7. need to buy LOTS more tools ;)

Did you turn the speed control knob? These lathes have a safety feature that the speed control knob must be turned clockwise to power up. The red power off safety switch must be up also. If u haven't suggest u look at the manual on the Harbor Freight site. The Grizzly manual is on the Grizzly site(for their 7x12). Good luck. It doesn't sound like anything serious--just a frustrating problem to solve.
