I have a Sherline adjustable tailstock custom tool holder (1203) for my lathe. I want to mount a 1/2-inch diameter tap follower in it. According to Sherline's instruction sheet, I need to make a split collet. The directions are not clear to me. The best directions I have found are in Joe Martin's book Tabletop Machining:

Viewed from an end, is the split collet shaped like this?

Yes . Match the OD to the holder and ID to your tool you need to hold . Split it by slitter saw or hack saw .

What does the split accomplish?

It allows the bushing to calapse on the tool .

It allows the setscrew of the adjustable holder to collapse the bushing to clamp down on the tool being held by the holder, this is common on turret lathe holders, so that inaccuracies in concentricity can be allowed for.

Thank you for the explanations.

I suppose that the best orientation for the slit is 90 degrees to the set screw, as shown in the figure.

Yes it is . Turn and bore your sleeve together then part it off , garenteeing (sp) concentricity .
