My children are all avid backcountry skiers. This week I was asked to help make ski boot crampons that fit to the toe of Alpine Touring (AT) boots.

My son did the basic CAD design using pictures of existing commercial designs as a starting point. The bodies were CNC'd from 0.100 steel and then bent in a vice/anvil. The holes for the securing pins were then tapped 1/4x20.

A bit of lathe work for the securing pins and some mill work for the toe pieces and all the parts were ready. One pin is fixed in the body while the second pin has a knurled end to allow the crampon to be fitted and removed. A couple of coats of flat black rust paint and they were ready to go. Total weight for the pair was 250 g.

A fun little project that should add a bit more safety to some of the routes that they do.

Cheers,

Adrian
