I need advise. I just bought a Tree 2vgc mill. It has a 3 hp spindle motor and a 1/2 hp feed motor on the knee. From what I have read I'm leaning towards an RPC so I can run the machine through its' control box and start stop switches.
Could I do the same thing with either a static phase converter or a VFD?

A couple of things come to mind.

I would be hesitant to use a VFD in an application like this where one of the motors could be switched on and off line. VFD's don't like to be disconnected from their loads. It might work ok if the spindle motor was already running and then the feed switched on or off. This might just look like an abrupt load change to the VFD. I have never tried this, so I can't really say what would happen.

Using a static phase converter would be alright as long as the spindle motor was started first, it would act as a RPC for the feed motor. The feed motor wouldn't like to act as RPC for the spindle motor

If you need to run the motors independently then 2 VFD's, 2 static phase converters, or a RPC would be the best.
