So, my brother is turning 80 in a couple weeks and my wife thought it was a good idea to make him somthing in the machine shop. I'm not done yet but here are some of the photos what have completed so far. I decided to make every part, the little studs and the nuts.

I've had my problems along the way.

Here is what I set out to build.
-edit-
I tried to post a video......

Ok, Here is what I set out to build.

I made a tripanning tool. I think I should make it thinner. But it worked.

Made a couple nuts and washers.

First time threading from the chuck out. I had two much stick out the first time and too big a cut on the first one. It caught and walked up on top of the tool.

I made two bases as my wife wants one also. The one on the right is the left-over stock from making the rings.

This is how I started; it was working pretty well but I was turning down the corners and went in too fast and cube caught the tool and ripped the cube out of the chuck and bent the support tube thing. It was still working but I couldn't get it centered after that. I wish I would have taken a photo of the failure. Luckly, only very minor damage that I was able to repair or remove enough so you can't see it.

Here is how I finished the cube. I think I'm going to make the next one on the mill. Then would it be called a Millers Cube? LOL

And the finished Cube!

Decided to try a different setup to thread with, still in reverse. It worked great!

These cubes are so amazing. I think you have shown some of the steps in other threads. If I could bother you, could you write out the steps? (Order of operations.). How do you free up the corners inside, is that the tool that is ground to a curve? Think you showed a picture of it elsewhere. How do you prevent the inner cubes from being damaged when turning and freeing? Are there any post turning steps?

One day I'd like to try this!

The cube I made is still all in one piece, the inside cubes are still attached. I have watched a couple of YouTubes where they cut the inside cubes loose. After they have 5 of the cubes cut, they use hot glue to hold it all together and then cut the last side apart. I gotta run, I'll follow up later.

I bet your brother will really appreciate this.
It is such a personal and unique gift.

Great work Tim!
