Just got an old Toastmaster Home Shop multi tool....opened it up and removed the fairly hard orange grease and replaced it with some moly I had for my cars.
Big mistake! it started smoking within 30 seconds.
This is not a 'sealed' unit, just casting to casting, so oils aren't the answer.
There are several "high temp" "high speed" greases out therIMG_0007.JPGe...WD-40 and Wolf's Head red

would these work, or is there a better answer?

Did the bearings get over packed? A bearing should only be 30% packed with a no. 00 grease or no.01 wheel bearing grease is usually a no.2. Kluber is a well known spindle bearing grease.

What does this "deluxe home shop" do?
supposedly a lot, but it is pretty small and lightweight. It's set up as a jigsaw, lathe, saw, yadda yadda
I picked it up to play with

Yes I probably did overpack it and will try it with less while looking for some spindle bearing grease

removed lots of the lube, tried it again and whadda ya know...works great! Thanks!

Don't know how useful as a lathe...it's pretty fast at the lowest speed. But the grinding/buffing might be worthwhile.
