Hello
I have been wanting a lathe for my shop for along time, and i found a deal on a Torrent t-72x42 which is bigger than i needed but i have the space. My shop is single phase power, so i have been reading about VFD'S, phase converters or trying to find a 5hp single phase motor that would fit in the lathe. I read quite a bit and haven't really seen where anyone has given the pro or cons to these types of conversions. I'm not a electrician so i just looking so advice thank you.

I use a vfd and am happy with it. gives me variable speeds with the turn of a dial. the phase converter won't do that. Unless the lathe is already set up with a variable speed motor I would go with a VFD. also you need a separate VFD for each machine where if you have a phase converter you can run several machines with it.
