What steel do you use to make gears from? I need to make a small 20 tooth gear and don't have a clue as to what to make if from. It is for the fine feed option on my heavy 10. I made one from brass but it is showing some wear. I expected that as it is a brass gear driving the steel gear on the banjo. 12L14 would be easy to machine but I don't know it it can be hardened or not. Opinions please.

1144SP (stressproof ) is what was used for my backgear replacement on my SB 9A.
A Google search shows it's a common material for that.

It depends on what the gears are for. I have used cold roll stress proof 4140 pre heat treated brass and aluminum ,plastic and phenolic also cast iron Each material has its use .

I would be interested in how you made that gear, mine is stripped.
