Modifying a digital caliper to made a poor man’s DRO on my tail stock. Dremel cut off wheel to remove the OD & ID “ears”. In attempting to drill a single clearance hole it stopped half way. I wonder if the heat from the cutoff operation contributed to the problem. So now I have a piece of work hardened SS and my question is: what if any technique can I employ to finish this hole.

My vote is for a carbide mill drill.

comes in more sizes. Works way better than a carbide end mill. Will work if the cobalt drill failed.
I like this tool. Thanks for showing me. I wasn’t aware of it though I do have one (too large) I acquired in an auction lot. To get clearance for the intended 4mm screw I’ll need a 3/16 drill mill. So in searching the site you provided I see they come in 60, 80 and 90deg tips. Which angle point do you recommend?

I have always used the 90...

Not sure its best, just works for me and if its not broke, i don't fix it.

Having no experience with carbide drilling do you recommend thin or regular viscosity cutting oil?

There again, I have just one can of high sulfer cutting oil. Bought it YEARS ago. works for me.
