And that's what makes it so confusing. The rules are different depending on which ATF agent you ask. This is by no means the agents fault either. The reality is the laws aren't perfectly clear so some interpretation is required.
 
The FFL is the same for gunsmith and retail on the FED side but the log is not the same for gunsmith and retail
If you sell guns you need more data than a gunsmith
Your State may two types
Most cities will give a LIC for mobile work if you are working out your home If you tell them you plan on work out your home they may not give the city LIC and you can do any work

I can tell you that in Gwinnet Cty GA... one CANNOT have an FFL from their home. Just a handful of counties in the state of GA are that way... Gwinnet is one of them.
 
I live in CA can tell you about
If you just doing gunsmith and not selling the key words are (mobile gunsmith work)
You go and fix the gun at there home you keep your paper at home
No looks in your after you get the LIC

I use to engrave firearms and was informed by t hose that supposedly knew that I would need an FFL, so I applied for and got one. That was in the late 80's and I got so much confused info and bureaucratic horse hockey that it became too hard to do. So I gave up the FFL and now only engrave my own stuff or the occasional presentation knife. Gun law and the IRS code would be hilarious if wasn't so painful.
 
From what I read on the ATF site once Toolman is correct. I can work on my friends firearms without a license as long as I do not charge and the firearm does not stay at my place over night. If it stays over night or I am charging him I need a license. Search the ATF site because all the information is there.
 
What if I build an AR for my own use, then a year from now decide to sell it or trade at a gun show. What type of license would I need?
Also, would I need to have a serial number stamped in the receiver and where or who do I get that number from?
