1982 Lada Niva

In this case the four, five and six speeds are all from BMW Mxx series engines, they just bolt up. You sometimes have to play with the clutch and flywheel combo to match the splines. The SMG is a whole different game. though. It's from behind a S85 V-10, not the same bell pattern as the M4x and M5x 4 and 6 cyl. It's going to take an adapter and crazy clutch matching. But that's the easy part. This SMG is totally computer and solenoid controlled. Adapting those electronics into a non-CAN E36 (M Roadster) will be..... interesting. And probably well beyond my capabilities and/or desire.

Talking about BMW gearboxes, i cut and welded this one for my rear wheel drive conversion 4 years ago. The gearbox may look little different but is GM copy of getrag 240 box found in many bmw from the 90's. Yep that also is a peugeot engine and i think i still have that slised bloki need to find it.

Holy Mother of hacksaw skills!!!

I"m familiar with that box. New Venture 1500. Over here it was fitted to Chevy and Dodge small pickups.

Scrap man finally come, loaded the parts car body shell i throw out a lot more spare body panels, they are taking too much room and now days if a have a big enough cash to need body parts i'll probably get another car. Now i need to make couple more runs to the dump to get rid of the plastic and garbage.

Holy Crap!
You are devoted and very skilled!!!!!

Okay so it was TIG process, what filler did you use for that?
Any tips for anyone trying to do that?
(not that I am that ambitious, I just want to understand how to attack that problem)

Thanks,
-brino

It's not that hard, but it will be much easier if you have a gearbox that has separate ball housing. Hardest part is centering it, living enough material so you can get it machined off later, because it always moves when welding. I don't own a tig welder, so after mocking it up i took it to a friend of my to weld it up, as you can see he is a pro as me he welded it without gloves half time without a welding mask :grin big: :grin big: . After welding i had to do lots of measuring it had moved back to front few mm in few spots, thankful because of the cast iron engine block that i used as a jig it was on centre. For filler material i think he used 6160 rods, both gearbox housing and the flange from the peugeot unit are cast aluminium so they are easy to weld up.

Well, long story short, my phone died, i've lost some photos permanently, some are being recovered, so my post may not be in order, on a different note a policeman stopped me today in the little niva. First stop ever in this car he didn't even ask for my papires, his first question was did you restore it yourself, i told him yes, he ask which year is it, 82, he seen it parked up the road, went and look at it and wanted to chat. He had some kind words to say, obviously off road enthusiast, i did hold up traffic when taking to him funny nobody was using there horn. I've never expected the reactions i'm getting with this little 4x4, people are more forcoming to speak to you, almost like they know you.

I needed to clean up the garage so i can start on making the adapter plate for the diesel, also i may need to do some emergency repairs on couple of other cars. After making couple of trips to the dump i dispose of the plastics and insolation. This left me with two engines, gearboxes in the middle of the garage. The first engine N/A has oil in coolant, so i took the cylinder head to see if i have a blown gasket or bad cylinder head. Thankfully the engine looks much better inside, the valves look like new also the pistons look new but they have masks where sometime in the past they had hit the valves, no big deal the fault is the head gasket, i found two spots were they gasket was blown and the head bolts wore pretty loose almost like someone torqued the head and forgot to tighten it by degrees.

Up possible be sure to install additional memory if possible and direct phone to save photos there.

The second Turbo diesel was in much worse state, all the important parts wore in good condition, the injection pump is dry not leaking, the turbo seams good has some shaft play but they are know to last like that. But i could not get it to turn over, i lay it on its side and removed the oil pan, oil pump, and looked at the cylinders from there, there was no rust, but they wore some drag marks like overheated marks. I removed the bearing caps and remove the crankshaft, the bearings has some scratches but are still in good shape, the crank is good also. Try to move the pistons, 3 of them moved but number one was stuck good. Because of this i had to take the head off and there was rust and other marks in all the cylinders, i maned go remove all the pistons using a long bar and big hummer, those bores and pistons are junk, i'll have to get bigger pistons if i want to use this block, i have suspicion that this car was junked because of bad compression cause of overheating.
