2013 POTD Thread Archive

Just finished this! An oiler for my Super 7. Made from copper pipe and brass.

Re: POTD - Spindle thread protector

I'm pretty new to machining. This is a spindle thread protector I made for my 1945 Logan/Wards lathe when I'm using collets. I started with 2" CRS. Now it's a 1 1/2 - 8 internal thread with spanner hole and knurled edge for easy on and off. I have two or three small door stops from learning to make internal threads, but learned a LOT doing this. To get the threads just right, I made a 1 1/2 - 8 external thread "spud" that fit my chucks perfectly. Then I could test fit the internal threads on the spindle protector for correct fit without taking them out of the chuck. Credit goes to Tubalcain and his YouTube videos, specifically #23. I would give anything to have had him as my shop teacher in high school or tech school! These are my first photo uploads, so I apologize in advance if I did it wrong.

GarageGuy, nothing wrong with the part and pics! Nicely done! Oh, I've been looking for a shiny door stop! Got an extra? (couldn't resist! Just kidding)

Oh, welcome to the forum!

Most of the dimensions are not critical to follow.

My tip is pressed on, some are not, so you can do a bigger wire size.

This was made out of a golf club, believe its 4130 tube.

Very nicely done! We need more pictures of your Logan.

Yeah, Mr. Pete would have been a cool teacher. I wish he was my neighbor now. :))

Welcome to the forum.
