Good day all

I came across this antique late and thought it would be a great restoration project.

Can anyone identify this lathe by any change?

Welcome to the group @Pietercronje !

I do not recognize it immediately, but I do enjoy looking thru all the manufacturers and pictures over here:
http://www.lathes.co.uk/

I'll spend some more time browsing around and get back if I see anything.

Pretty cool. Looks like it is pretty old too.

has a Barnes flavor, but the gap bed is throwing me off

Don't many/most of the Barnes have two counter-rotating lead-screws and lock to one for forward and the other for reverse feed?

This has been fun!

I have spent some hours looking thru many gap-bed lathe listings at lathes.co.uk.
Better than anything on TV!

I guess your lathe cannot be too old due the v-belt pulleys at the headstock instead of flat belt pulleys.
Any indication that the v-belt pulleys are not original?

I did NOT find an exact match.

I was hoping that this knob on yours:

would be the smoking gun....but none of the lathes had anything similar.

Does it have a hole thru it?
1609990123764.png

any indication that it is an adjustment or mount for something?

I sure do see some other similarities to a couple other lathes.......

1) the Randa: http://www.lathes.co.uk/randa/page2.html

similarities are the tailstock and the way the apron fades off to the right side
of course there are differences too...your tailstock is offsetable, the Randa tailstock is not.
and the ends of your tailstock are straight up/down, these ones curve

tailstock:

apron:

2) the Grayson lathe has the same two similarities: http://www.lathes.co.uk/grayson/

3) the Relm tailstock has the lock right on top like yours: http://www.lathes.co.uk/relm/index.html
...but the tailstock shape is not right.

1609989582577.pngpe,

4) the Drummond tailstock is more similar in shape: http://www.lathes.co.uk/drummond-flatbed-1902-1912/

and is offsetable, but the lock is not on top of the barrel...
and the headstock and beds are very different!

I might have a little more time to spend....but here's hoping someone comes along that knows it right off!

Good Luck!

I;m thinking that is a lever (missing the handle), that locks the headstock to the way slot, and allows he headstock to slide and partially cover the gap.

Good day gents

Here some closup photos of headstock and brass knobe. You will see that modifications was done to headstock casting to make clarence for v-belts. Don't know if this was done to accomodate a drive configuration change from overhead drive to side drive or that the spindle was replaced.
Thank you again for all your input and help

Regards
Pieter

Earlier today I was searching lathes.co.uk again trying to ID this lathe:
https://www.hobby-machinist.com/thr...e-help-with-identification.89822/#post-813726

...and I finally found one with a very similar little knob on the headstock of the lathe in this thread:
1610476843779.png

It is the Auerbach:
http://www.lathes.co.uk/auerbach/index.html

It also has v-belt not flat-belt pulleys.

However it is NOT the same lathe as the OP in this thread:
-they do not show a gap-bed model
-the headstock is not the same
-the tailstock is not the same
-the cross-slide is not the same
-the carriage and apron are not the same

It is hard to believe the amount of content on that site. There are so many lathes documented there it is difficult to wade thru them all.
Also, I am sure that many lathes were made that are not documented there.

Anyway, I am still looking around for lathes similar to this one and the one from the other thread.
