Can anyone tell me where I can find out information on the different type of drill bits. I got a old very heavy drill motor that takes a type of bit that you have to use a wedge to knock out the bit. Can anyone tell me the name of these bits. I assume they are obsolete bits. Thank you for any help.

Most drill spindles use a Morse taper or other taper as @GeneT45 mentioned. That does not mean you can only use those drills. You should be able to buy a drill chuck that will also go into that taper and then you can use anything you want in there. Drill with a taper, or your regular drills in a chuck. Nothing but options. Good luck.

The drill bits that came with i it don't have the flat piece on the end of the bit. I am not sure it will seat in the holder.

May need a pic to fully understand what you have there?

The flat bit is for 'auto extract' as well as anti-rotation. If the taper is correct, the others should work, but require tapping out.

You have to take a wedge piece 1/4 inch round bar and put it in the side of the chuck and hammer the wedge to release the drill bit. if that makes sense.

@mirage100 ,

Here's a site that shows the basics of installing and removing a Morse taper to drill chuck adaptor.
https://www.ereplacementparts.com/r...Remove_and_Reinstall_a_Drill_Press_Chuck.html

Note two things:
1) the tapered wedge used to remove the MT taper from the machine spindle thru the little side window.
2) the MT shank to jacob's type drill chuck adaptor

....and here's a PDF file with the measurements of the common Morse tapers:
https://www.morsecuttingtools.com/home/jail/home/bes-morse/images/cms/Tech Sheet Page/Morse Taper Dimensions.pdf

Not all Morse taper drill bits and adapters have the flat tang on the end.
Some Morse taper sleeves have a large thru-hole and are meant to fit say a MT-2 tool into a MT-4 machine

Here's an adapter sleeve with a tang:
https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1195&category=

....and some without a tang:
https://www.lprtoolmakers.com.au/morse-taper-centre-sleeves/

Other Morse taper tools have a threaded hole on the back end for using a draw bar for pulling it into a mill spindle.

Some pictures of what you have would be very helpful.
