Drilling 1/4" mild steel with a 5/16' Cobalt bit on my mill. 1,100 rpms. Using cutting oil. Getting these really tightly wound continuous chips as well as some more normal ones. Seems like the hole is good and the drill bit looks pristine afterwards. Any ideas about speeds/feeds and whether this is okay? If Cobalt can run around 25% faster than HSS I'm probably a little slow here.

If you want shorter chips, just release pressure on the handle every couple of seconds.

Alternately, I save these chips to use as a collapsible spreader when I need to clamp something in my vise that is not (yet) square. {back-jaw::part::spreader::front-jaw}

What a great Idea.
