Side question, do you know what is this?

That’s the lead pointer. Slide the end cap off and there should be five or six little blades in there with a tapered recess in the centre.

You can point your lead with sandpaper if you dont have that part.

This is the sharpener I have...

We use to refer to those as coffee grinders, you would put a point on the lead then dress it with a small board that had sandpaper attached to it to get the proper point. When drawing with a lead holder you would roll the holder to keep the point sharp and the lines thick and sharp.

My mother was a draftsman, all the way back to drawing war maps in WW 2. She had every one of those gadgets , a few I wound up with. I bought her a big drafting table and cut it down to fit in her living room. She would draw your custom house plans for $35.
