horizontal bandsaw cylinder

I was concerned about o-rings too when I built mine since I used a Bimba air cylinder. I ended up using Febi/Bilstein 6162 automotive mineral oil, for brakes and steering on German cars. No problems with leaks, 2 years in.
There might be a few small particles in my system causing the stuck valve- it was assembled in less than clean conditions :)

I believe conventional brake fluid absorbs water after a while, don't know about ATF or mineral oil. Water in the fluid might cause stickiness

Just thinking out loud here, I've been thinking about building one and using a light motor cycle
fork oil, as rubber O rings and seals are used for them ( I think )....................:dunno:
Any thoughts from Y'all..........??
 
I have a Famco band saw that had a leaking cylinder. I was going to remake the piston with o rings but I did have the correct tap I need so I ended up using a leather cup washer with the original piston. so far so good.
 
My old 8n tractor uses a leather and cast iron O ring assembly for the lift cylinder.
I forgot about leather rings for hydraulics, very old school and very effective...........
 
The fork oil sounds like a good idea, probably mineral oil also
The Bilstein stuff I used was about 12$ / Liter

I have a 1996 Enco 7x12 bandsaw that I am restoring, and the down feed cylinder needs new seals for the piston and rod. Has anyone replaced these items and where did you find them.

Try McMaster Carr. Measure what you have.

Yes, I looked a Mcmaster. I am having trouble with the piston. Don't know if it is in two pieces or one. it has four small holes on either side as though they could be for a spanner wrench. I have tried to see if it unscrews, but don't want to damage it and then have to make a new one. Just didn't want to cut the seal off and then find out I have something unavailable. HF , JET, and Grizzly only offer a new cylinder for big bucks. It is difficult to get a measurement with the seal in place.
