Hello, I just got my 1st smartphone, it's an iPhone 5s. What's a good app to download (there seem to be many) for machining? I spend a fair amount of time calculating SFPM for my different sized endmills as it relates to different metals. Also, I refer to my little pocket guide for selecting drill bit sizes (metric, fractional, A-Z, & wire size). Is there an app that can do both SFPM's and drillbit sizes? Between the two, SFPM calculation would be most handy - I don't mind looking up drillbit sizes in my book since I keep the page tagged so I can go right to it.

My most used machining iPhone apps are Safari, i41CX+ (HP 41 calculator emulator), and Thread Data (screw thread dimensions and drill sizes). For SFM I mostly do it in my head, having memorized that 1" diameter, 100 FPM, and 400 RPM go together, close enough. All other sizes, cutting speeds, and RPMs are proportional from that. In other words, want 200 FPM? Double the RPM. Want twice the diameter? Halve the RPMs. Etc.Etc.

Safari is to find what I need on the web.

Get the iEngineer app, a picture says a thousand words :))

While I was looking at the suggestion above I found a free app called "Engineering Unit Converter" from thermofluids.net. It needed no permissions (my favorite kind of app). I do a lot of torque conversions at work, it will come in handy. It also does the angular to decimal degree conversions I need too.

Great app. It ain't free, but for $1.22, it may as well be!

Before I knew any better and I had an Apple device, I used Imachinist. I switched to an Android phone and there are 20 times more apps. I use Calc4CNC, CNC sTaper Machinist Buddy, Machining Mate, MechTab and Lathe PCRmore than I use my phone for making phone calls.

Android is the shiznit! If you're a tech geek like me, you can install custom roms, which I've done, Android is open source, the possibilities are limitless. Apple is capitalism at its core, which means, if it doesn't go thru Apple, it ain't happening.

Anything for windows phones? I am looking for a feeds and speeds calculator for both lathes, and mills and also something for drilling and tapping would also be nice. The Windows line-up is slim pickings at the moment but any help is appreciated.

Paul.
