Need a suggestion on which quick change tool post to get for my "new" Logan 815 lathe. The lantern tool post that came with it is missing parts, so I figure I may as well take the plunge now.

I see that the AXA tool posts are spec'd for 6-12" swing lathes. BXA tool posts are spec'd for 10-15" lathes.

Which one would be the more appropriate choice for my Logan? AXA or BXA?

Check the height from the top of your compound (where the base of the QCTP will sit) to the centerline of the spindle. The tool holder manufacturers have published the dimension from the top of the tool to the base of the tool holder which, at minimum height, will rest on the compound. Based on what size tool bits you plan on using, that will tell you which QCTP to select. The other consideration would be to use the largest size permissible to maximize rigidity. The Shars website has tool holder dimensions. Most Machine tool supply catalogs also have those dimensions.

I would NOT put the BXA on a 10inch lathe, I have one on my atlas 12" and it's right on the edge of being to tall for some tool, actually I have one 5/8 tool that I have to hang the edge off the compound to get the holder low enough to be on center to the work.

Also, get the rest of the parts for the lantern post, I've had to use mine in certain jobs where a my quick change would not fit in between the headstock and work and be able to cut what I needed to have cut, I put the lantern on and job done.

They make oversize holders for the post, so you can hold larger shank tools for more rigidity.

Go with the AXA, the BXA is too large for a 10" lathe.

That is correct. I purchased a AXA for my 10" lathe and it was .060" too tall to use 1/2" tooling. I had to remove .080" from the compound base to make it useable. Bob

I have an AXA on my Logan 10" ... to me its a nice fit.

If you do a lot of close in work you may also want to find the parts to get the lantern style tool post up and running. I use an AXA QCTP on my 10" Seneca Falls Star 20 machine. For most things there's plenty of clearance. However when there's close in work sometimes the tool has to be extended farther than I like . In those instances I revert to the lantern style tool post. It takes a couple minutes longer to setup, but easily clears the chuck without having to hyper extend the tool.

Shars sells a 101-XL tool holder for the AXA QCTP. It is designed to take a 5/8" tool bit but when used with the 1/2" tool bits will drop the tool by 1/8" which should bring the lowest setting below the center line. I believe that the Dorian and T & O AXA tool holders are a 1/16" lower at minimum than the Aloris, Phase II, or Shars standard 101.

That's is good info, If I knew that in the past I could have saved a lot of time. Thanks for posting. Bob
