Information needed on a Sidney 14" lathe

For about $200 bucks, you could buy a Teco VFD to power the lathe with.

For the size of this lathe, you would think it would have at least a 5 HP motor running it.

I have considered a VFD, but the lathe also has a 1/4hp 3ph coolant pump, my understanding is that a VFD can only control 1 motor, I definitely would upsize the RPC for future machine purchases as Ken suggests. Thanks for all your comments!

That's a beautiful lathe, I looked at one recently, they're very heavy duty built like a Monarch. I considered buying it but it would be too much drama getting it into the basement...
Humm... I'm seeing somewhere around 2 ½ -2 ¾ hp according to the tables I looked at?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the coolant pump. Unless you are going to do some serious machine work. Use a mister if you need coolant. I haven't messed with coolant on any of my machines in over 35 years. The one time I needed coolant, I setup a Cool Mist mister and hooked it up to a spade drill. Worked like a charm.

I couldn’t imagine trying to get a lathe of this weight in a basement, lol. Thanks for the input.

Well maybe I’ll revisit the VFD, my understanding is they wire directly to the motor and all functions are then controlled through the VFD? Can you wire up the forward/reverse switch to a VFD?

The VFD is the F/R sw and can be wired to a remote along with with remote vari speed pot if vfd not mounted in convenint place.

Kind of like the F/Off/R drum switch on my machine, don’t need to even look at it in a panic, but sounds like it might be possible to incorporate it with the VFD, thanks for the input.
