Was not meant to be a project, but it is what I did in the shop today.

Pics speak for themselves, my Simpson took a dive off the bench today. So much for the roll top case providing any protection.

Anyone know a good way to fix Bakelite?

i have "calibrated" a couple meters like that myself, i feel your pain :bawling:

i hate to admit it, but between me and you, i put one back together with clear RTV ;)
 
I've used JB Weld with some success. The broken edge surfaces will give a good "bite" for the glue. Let it harden overnight, then use a razor blade or Xacto knife to scrape or chip off the squeeze-outs. This is the grind setting knob on my coffee grinder. You can see how badly it was
shattered at one time.

Interestingly, it is the meters back housing that took the most damage.The roll top case made out mostly ok. I have two others without the roll top case, they are older models, so I have no idea if the case will fit on one of them. But then, I'm thinking I would be better off looking for a decent (and not outrageous price) nylon padded case for it. I'm thinking a case that I have for an older CPAP, might be close enough.
 
Last few days i've been very busy at work, but i've put in the effort to get something done to finish the little 4x4 project that has taken precedence over all the others, but the garage has become a real mess so last two days i've put in 4 hours each to just cleaning the garage but half of yesterday i spent cleaning drains and pumping out rain water, the weather decided to dump 30 sm per m3 or rain, we usually get 10% of that max. It's not fun being wet head to toes for hours in the cold.
 
The Problem: sadly they don't make weed-whackers like they used to. The button cap that advances the line wore clean through -- after only 25 years!

The Carnage: ABS is fun to turn, kind of like biting into a fresh pastry. You just want a bigger and bigger bite. It's messy though, and stringy chips.

The Solution: supplementary end cap to slip over top of what's left of the old one. A toupee, as it were.

The Fix: back in service.
