Rhodes 7” Shaper

Looks like some scoring on the ram ways. Not nice, but not the end of the world. Stone them down flat before reassembly. This is caused by lack of lube, I would recommend drilling a couple of holes in those hold down strips and adding some drip oilers to use during operation. Way wipers on the ram are nice for keeping that oil from weeping all over the place, and keeping schmutz out of the ways. Enjoy.

That cleanup project is a perfect candidate for Easy Off blue can oven cleaner. It's a foaming polyalkyl cellosolv formulation that cleans like nothing else. It'll take the brown stains in the last two pics right out.

Great ideas, thanks all.
I have some precision ground stones thanks to Bob Korves.
I was planning on using them where I can.
Yeah, scoring but I think it will be ok. Adding lube points is a great idea.
It will clean up nice.
Mike, where do I get phosphoric acid?

Home depot caries phosphoric acid in the paint section, it comes in plastic gallon jugs, is a greenish blue color and I believe they sell it under the name "Clean and Strip" Also, the "naval jelly" type rust removers are phosphoric acid with a gelling agent, if you need it to stick to a part, also in the paint section.

Great, I was wondering about the Socialist Republic of California but it seems you too share this beautiful place. (Oops, I think I may have broken a rule)
Thanks

Those are some massive drive sheaves! Line shaft conversion?

I don't know. I'll do the math before I fire it up to see what rpm this should run at.
While I'm on the subject??
You shaper guys know the best rpm to run on this type of machine tool?
Appreciate it.

I cleaned it up enough to get it running last night to see what I had before I go any further.
Everything works perfect. There is some galling on the ram contact points-lack of lubrication.
It seems to slide very smooth with the gib adjusted and oiled with way oil.
Now that I know it just needs a clean up, I'll continue. I'm not interested in pimping it out. The paint and patina is just fine with me.
A little bit of scrubbing and it cleans right up.IMG_3004.JPGIMG_3005.JPG
