Recommendation for semi-auto rifle?

Good recommendation above actually just picked up a s&w 15-22 2 days ago. which s&w has a great deal going on them right now. Comes with case scope and bipod 449.00. I do love my Henry rifles though if you want a classic lever action plinker.
 
I enjoy my SKS carbine. Pretty darn accurate and ammo is reasonable and reloadable. No good way to mount a scope but for 50 yards iron sights should be OK. Also fine to use as a deer rifle (comparable to a 30-30) if you are a hunter.
 
If you just wanna plink, you don't wanna pay. Not much anyway. That's .22. They're all good with the aforementioned 10/22 leading the field although the S&W is much more fun if you like the AR platform.

If none of these blow your skirt up, I'd look into any of the several 9mm carbines, starting with the Kel-Tec Sub2000. It folds; built on a Glock 17 (mags and parts) and 9mm is a lotta fun out to about 100 yards. 9mm is among the cheapest of the non-rimfire rounds so it can be reloaded.
 
I like the CZ 452-453 line. These are bolt action = discontinued
I think they went to the 455.
In my opinion, you get what you pay for with CZ. Extremely accurate.
Although I have a Savage 93BTVS in 22WM that produced this at 50 yards =benchrest.

Get a Ruger PC Carbine its a 9mm take down rifle it takes SR9 mags, Glock mags or if you have an M&P 9mm you can mill a small slot in the front the mags and they work flawlessly in the PC Carbine...... Most indoor ranges let you shoot it in their pistol range.....


I have an after market barrel shroud on mine and a +11 extension my M&P mag....

I second wrat's recommendation for the Kel-Tec. I think the SU-16 may be a more useful tool on the broad spectrum (5.56), but both are neat carbines. I think they make a few others now, too. They are inexpensive and rather demure compared to more military-themed arms, but that can be a good thing, especially in California. Excellent pickup truck guns.

Yeah the S&W 15-22 is a fun shooter. I added a can and use subsonic rounds for more enjoyable shooting.
 
Lot's of people recommending kel tecs, but I would highly encourage you to shy away. they have very spotty QC and it's not rare for people to have to send their stuff back to the manufacturer. It sounds like they take care of them, but why bother when there are so many other things you can get and be reasonably assured will be 100% right out of the gate.

If you want a 9mm rifle, the PC-9 is a good choice. It'll depend on what you think is fun and cool and no one can decide that for you. Not having a real set "goal" in mind for a gun definitely opens up a plethora of options.
 
Just another area to consider...

There are a huge selection of 9MM parts kits. Buy most the parts then build your own weapon. I'd start with an Uzi, a sten, or a Suomi M31. Must be a hundred other possibilities. Then you got the joy of building it yourself plus the fun at the range.
