Picked up a commercial treadmill awhile back. Has 3 phase 4hp motor. Has standard treadmill control panel. The motor control box gets it input from console. Is it possible to use box to run motor and have variable speed?

You mean operate it without the user console, just the power section? It depends. If the user console talks to the power unit by means of a serial data connection it would be difficult to reverse-engineer it

Next dumb question. How would I know if it sends signals thru a serial data connection. Kinda figured it would be a pain. Thanks

Most treadmills are serial control
I found their website- looks like it is serial:
Write 'em maybe they'll send you a copy of the PC tools, then you could hook up a laptop to it :)
If you can get a schematic of the power section you might could bypass the communications stuff and make it run standalone

There's a video, of course... Seems like there is a vid for everything. I didn't watch it but it looks like it might help.

Looks beefy! If you can get the specs for the serial protocol, you could use Arduino to control it. Too bad it's not as simple as rigging up a potentiometer and a switch. That hardware appears solid, it ought to be great for shop duty.

I believe I saw modbus mentioned on their website- it's pretty common in industry nowadays
I've never used it though

This is way beyond my pay grade. To the pile it goes. Picked up a large treadmill with a 3.5 hp dc motor. More my speed.

I don't blame you. It would add a lot of extra time to the project to sort that stuff out. Sometimes, a simple button and knob are all that we need so we can keep working on the projects that drive us.
