Just stuck a dial indicator on my chuck and got .002" runout. Is this acceptable or should I replace the head bearing with the tapered bearings from LMS?
Remove the chuck and put your indicator point in the inside taper. That will tell you if the spindle is running out. If that checks ok then put the chuck back on and a dowel pin in the chuck. Indicate the dowel pin. If that checks ok then don't worry about the outside of the chuck.
And while you have the Chuck off be sure to clean the mounting surfaces on the Chuck & spindle real good. A tiny chip between the spindle & Chuck will cause a lot of runout on work being held in the Chuck.
