A little gab about drawbar collet closers

The manual for my Hardinge says to remove it when not using it to avoid damage to the draw tube and the inside of the spindle. I figure they know more than I do. Collets are nice when there is a good surface to chuck on to. Like in a second operation.
I’m pretty sure that is for safety so that if the pin comes out it doesn’t start spinning around.

I’ve been using the same Harding lathe at work for 35yrs and the only time it is taken out is if someone is doing high speed work in the 3 jaw as it gets a bit noisy.

Doesn’t seem any worse for wear.
