Metrology and standards should make purchasing many machining components a simple decision tree.

1. select accuracy
2. compare prices for a given accuracy, and feature set
3. pick lowest price

In practice a few problems get in the way:

i) Accuracy is not always described with the same metrics
ii) Dishonest advertised accuracy (or poor inspection, resulting in out of specs components getting sold)

I started looking for an ISO30-ER32 collet chuck, and set of collets, and one of the "almost reputable and almost cheap" vendors advertises compliance to the DIN 6499B standard :

https://accusizetools.com/products/er-metric-collets-sets-din-6499b?variant=35246708883610

That sounds very serious, but I have googled and can't even find what this standard says.

I searched on Aliexpress, to find collets with "good specs", with a vendor that is a manufaturer that specialises on this kind of tooling (I avoid those that sell everything from picnic chairs to tractors)

And I see other kinds of metrics:

The advertised accuracy specs is a single number : 0.003 mm

(most vendors also use a single number to describe accuracy, but they are more often higher, 0.005, 0.008,...)

Is that number a TIR (total indicator runout) ?

The collet chuck from the same vendor more generous in the advertised specs: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006061931370.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.73ee38daPC1QoU&mp=1

Material : 20CrMnTi Steel
Product Precision: 0.001mm
Overall Clamping Precision: ≤0.003mm
Product hardness: HRC56°-60°
True roundness: <0.4μ
Carburizing depth: >0.8MM
Surface roughness: <0.8
speed:G2.5/30000RPM

Here, "clamping precision" could mean TIR, it would make sense, because there is no way a TIR of a collet cannot be measured, without (at least) a chuck and a cylinder that will both contribute to the TIR.

I've been comparing collets and chucks on Aliexpress, and they seem to express the metrics in the same way.

Unfortunately Aliexpress does not seem to provide a way to contact a vendor.

I'm tempted to just buy it and measure myself, but Aliexpress has no "free return & refund" like Scam-ar-zone.

Does anyone have info on DIN6499B ?

It would be a nice "hobbyist community" effort, to find the good manufacturers on Aliexpress, it would result in better tools for less money, or more likely more and better tools for the money that we are itching to spend on tools ! ;-)

One thing I'm tempted to do, is get the chuck and a few collets, measure them, and if they are good, order a whole set.

Perhaps someone has already found the good manufacturer on Aliexpress, and I can benefit from their experience.

That's a good idea. I buy often on AliExpress.
Frequently, when I go there to buy more of an item, the seller isn't carrying that item any more, or the seller is 'gone'.
But when I can re-connect, it is a very useful thing.
If the moderators here could make a 'sticky' post or even a sub-forum, we could share our info about good stuff from AliExpress.
About collets and ER32 chucks: I've bought quite a few -all from China-, and most of them are in the 'good enough for the work I do' category, so I can't make recommendations. Some of the collets have been pretty rough, with swarf and metal shavings in the slots, so it pays to clean them all well, and also do a bit of very gently deburring with 320 paper or similar...before getting excited about measurements.
Folks who don't mind paying 2x or 3x the lowest price from AliExpress buy from resellers like Accusize, from what read online. The idea is that the reseller provides the QualityControl and does the comparison shopping for buyers.

Check what ever you by as soon as it comes in. It is hit and miss on import tooling. Some will be in spec. other times they will only make a good door stop.

Better ER collets seem to claim max runout of 8um or about 3 tenths (.0003").
No-Name inports are likely to be hit or miss, best to carefully check them.
I have a set of Techniks ER32 collets got some years back and they seem to be very good quality at a reasonable price; they claim .0002" runout "typical".
If you set up your collet chuck to be radially adjustable you can dial out the runout for a given piece.

Hi all. I am inexperienced so some of what I say may not make sense to experienced people. I have a Logan 820 lathe that has most of the #3 Morse taper machined out to a cylinder. The mounting surfaces on the lathe have no measurable runout. I bought a ER32 chuck that mounts the same as the 3 jaw chuck. There is no measurable runout on any exterior surface. The interior taper is out by at least .004". I have done the fallowing and have run out of patience trying to get 8 deg.

1/24/2023 ER32Collet mounted on the lathe threads and shoulder. 1/2" dowel .0005" run out at the collet 0.003 at 3" out if I tap it into .0005" at the collet. The bluing at the large end of the collet has the bluing removed for about 1/16" all the way around.
At the small end about 1/16" of bluing is removed 1/2 way around. Even if it is very tight a tap with a plastic mallet will move things around. Recut the tapper again. I set the Compound at 8 deg.

1/25/2023 Recut the tapper again. I set the Compound at 8 deg using a magnifying glass to view my settings. It cut 9.60deg. 10:30AM

I did it all over again 1:00pm. I cut it at 7.69deg. I have had enough. It is very concentric. No detectable runout just not the right angle. If I put in a 1/2" steel pin and I tap it into concentricity I can get .0015" at 3 inches out and no detectable runout (~-.00025") at the chuck face.

What can I expect?
Thanks

My go to for ER collet tooling...
