Another what is it ???

This was in a bunch of tools recently acquired from a deceased machinist. It’s base is about 3-1/2” dia. And it’s about 5” tall with center crotch full extended. There’s only about an inch of travel of center post. As always thanks for any input. There’s no marks, names etc.. on the piece.

In other words , a machinist jack stand .
Yes but for a very specific use, to steady long slender workpieces being driven by the dividing head, kind of like the use of a follow rest on the lathe.
