Anybody Know what this is for

I found this in a yard sale for 2 bucks.
The only markings is Starrett. The two pins are retractable.

That's a surface gage. It's primarily a layout tool from the "old days". The two pins could be used to guide the gage along the side of a surface plate, or some other straight-edged surface.
They come in a variety of sizes and specific styles:

Hi Ross,

I made and used one in my machining days for marking out and set up work, but I never used one in relation to scraping before.
Care to elaborate on that?

Finding the depth of the scrapings? The variations?

We never used a surface gauge in scraping.....maybe I'll learn something new!
