Atlas MFC Refurbishment

How did you deal with the drive screws? Or have you? I've never tried to remove them before..

The table could be blanchard ground if the top is bad.. but the bottom side, I haven't a clue. Also how tight of a tolerance are you after?

And since I'm tossin' out questions.. Would you have a picture of the drawbar? I need to make one for mine.

34_40,

If you are referring to the drive screws that hold the various nameplates on, they should be driven out from the inside.

There is a dimensioned JPG of the drawbar for the Atlas mill in Downloads. It is in the Drawings folder.

Hi All,

It's been a busy as Heck Saturday.

Yesterday, I put some parts in the electrolytic bath. Today, they came out.

Here's the knee, fresh outta the soup.

Needs some love with a stiff bristled brush, brake cleaner, and paper towels.

in contrast, here's one of the guards. A highly under-rated part.

Here's the knee. Cleaned, taped, and painted. I accidentally knocked it down, and I'll spare you the profanity, but suffice it to say, I most assuredly offended everybody. I apologize, but sometimes, all you can do is stand there and swear at it.

Is the end, it came out good. I spent a lot of today wielding a variety of paint removal tools, and went through an entire can of brake cleaner. I gotta say, it's nasty, but it cleans like nobody's business.

More guard porn. It looks nasty now, but just wait....

See what happens with a bit 'o primer?

Then add some enamel paint....

Yes, it's that shiny. Well, mostly that shiny. I got a lot 'o parts painted today.

Nope, I don't give two hoots about the trees. They'll survive. Overgrown weeds is what they are.

Here's one of the more important parts. The headstock. I left it in the rust bath overnight, cleaned it up, and while it's not perfect, it's pretty darn clean.

I masked off the spindle bearing bores, but the rest of it will get cleaned out with a tap or a slitted arbor & sandpaper.

There's more pictures to be taken, but I got busy and my camera battery was dying.

I have to give kudos to my DeWalt corded drill. A flap wheel, and several wire wheels made short work of the schmutz on the parts to be painted. Although, I did run through a can of brake cleaner today. :/

Not sure why the previous post's pictures showed up as links. I *think* I clicked the correct button.....

Not much done today. I mounted the headstock to the column, the column to the base, and got the whole mess bolted back down to the stand. Sunday the only day my wife and I both have off, so I don't want to be in the shop, but I needed to clear off the workbench. Easiest way to do that was to take an hour to get the machine together enough to put it back on it's stand.

Forgot to charge my camera's battery, doing it now. Maybe pics tomorrow.

I'll need to pick up some little brushes so I can touch-up some areas where the cast parts don't line up exactly. Didn't expect them to, but the bare metal around the edges is driving my OCD nuts. Gotta fix that. I don't foresee having this machine apart again anytime soon, so I'm not worried about the paint splitting when it's disassembled.

Exciting news later on today, but not horizontal mill related. :)

I can't see the attachments even when I click on the links.

I did a search this morning for "Disassemble Atlas Mill" and found this thread. Looks like it ended last January with a whimper rather than a bang. Is ogberi still out there? Is he still working on his mill? Inquiring minds want to know!

:frog:

Dunno what happened with Ogberi and his MFC. He's still active on the site - several posts within the past week. But all in other Fora.

It's a shame... he has a nice writing style and I was really enjoying the chance to follow along with what he was doing. Ogberi, if you read this, please come back here and catch us up with what you've been doing on your Atlas MFC. Even hearing about any difficulties you encounter(ed) will simply reinforce what the rest of us are doing.

What a cryin' shame! You KNOW how we all like pictures.
