Ball screw vs standard machined screw

It's pie in the sky but Moore was one of the early manufacturers of hardened and lapped lead screws. Their goal was to build a length standard into the machine. Friction was not an issue because it was strictly for manual operation. Jig borers usaully aren't used for milling, either. But other than that, I've not seen any applications of hardened lead screws.
