How best to bore a tapered hole in steel?
Trying to match the taper of a civil war cartridge (Burnside) in the breech block.
Lathe plus boring bar or ...?
Best bet. Lathe with taper attachment.
Next, Correct angle reamer.
Third best bet, boring bar and crank the compound a the right angle. (not reliable, as you crank the compound you lean in, pull back as the handle goes around. )
It's a short taper so 4jaw on lathe , compound set to matching angle then bore to fit , polishing is called for on this too. Multi grits to 320 minimum .
Would need a very small boring bar to reach the small end of the taper.
Here are a couple of photos of the cartridge. I have just the cartridge, no bullet.
Now that you mention morse #2, a reamer for that taper was my first thought to create the cavity. Though I think the morse would be a bit too long.
Have to make some measurements.
