I have a buffing station with two 10 inch wheels and use it for buffing metal as needed.

I was just buffing an aluminum tube. As usual there is a build up of buffing compound and it needs to be removed. This time I brought it to the wash sink and used a scotch brite pad but it made scratches and I needed to re buff it. I also had some things to degrease in the sink and sprayed some brake cleaner on those parts. Some brake cleaner got on my aluminum tube and it just made it all go away. Light wipe with a paper towel and it was all clean!

Is this something widely known and I just found out?

Great way to clean off the buffing compound.
