Can anyone tell me what this very old part is?

I found this after a good rain uncovered it in our backyard. Our house is 110 years old.
Here is a picture, we do have a old well, but not working.

at a guess, it looks like it might be a reversible jaw for a pipe vise.

My guess on that one is that it's from being outside.

+1 on Bill Gruby' s answers. I have one just like it in aluminum. Before it was rusted, it likely had the height of each notch stamped on it.
